Head of Customer Support, Airframe and Contracts Services at Airbus

When Airbus looks back at the A220, airBaltic is always at the center. With 25 years of experience in aerospace and as Head of Customer Support, Airframe and Contracts Services at Airbus, he has witnessed many collaborations, yet this one stands out.

For him, the history of the Airbus A220-300 is inseparable from airBaltic. As the global launch operator, their early commitment was bold and forward-thinking. “By being one of the first airlines to commit to the program, airBaltic took a significant risk. Their decision showed remarkable foresight and a profound belief in the aircraft’s potential,” Ghanem recalls.

airBaltic didn’t just adopt the A220-300 – they helped shape its future. Their in-service feedback provided critical real-world data that enabled Airbus to fine-tune systems and improve performance. “They were transparent and collaborative, acting as a crucial partner in our continuous improvement process,” he explains.

He still vividly remembers the delivery of the very first A220-300 (then called the CS300) to airBaltic, describing it as a proud moment and the culmination of hard work from both teams. airBaltic’s role extended far beyond its own operations, as the airline consistently volunteered aircraft for air shows and demo tours, proving to the world that the A220 was not just a regional jet, but a versatile mainline aircraft capable of transforming fleet strategies.

Today, Ghanem sees airBaltic not just as a customer but as a valued ambassador of the A220 program. “Their single-type fleet strategy has been a testament to efficiency and operational flexibility,” he notes. It has helped optimize maintenance, training, and crew scheduling while expanding their network.

“In many ways, airBaltic’s story has become part of the Airbus story,” he reflects. Their collaboration has not only strengthened the A220’s global success but also challenged Airbus to be a better partner, committed to innovation and customer needs.
